I'm just about to get my feet wet with traffic analyzing. Can someone explain to me (or point me somewhere) the Pro and Cons of using a log-analyzer vis-a-vis a traffic-analyzer?

Ditto on that. Regarding your specific question, you may be looking at "traffic analyzer" products that are actually log analyzers. "traffic analyzer" could mean anything.
My vote is for little scripts on the page over log files. But anyone looking at spider data would go the other way.

An argument can be made that to maximize the amount of information one can gather about one's traffic, one should use both types of tracking (log and script).

I have found google analytics to be pretty impressive so far.
