According to Google analytics, I have something like 8500 page views a day on a website; every page displays an AdSense block. According to AdSense, I have approximately 6000 page impressions - how does that happen? Is that due to ad blockers?

Quite possibly - and it also could be due to page revisits/refreshes which I understand AdSense may ignore whereas GA may not.
