I'm an Analytics user so my question is couched in those terms.

So every month, I get about 1/3 of our conversions from "return visitors". That's about normal.

How can I figure out where these mystery conversions actually originated from?

We know that cookies last for quite some time - is this
"return" visitor actually double counted and is correctly counted the first time as paid or organic, direct, etc?

Do other analytics tools actually segment these out and count return visitors as "paid return", "organic return", "direct return".

We'd like to know if we have a higher proportion of returns from one source or another.

Googling on this topic tells me there is nothing cogent out there that answers this question - or more-so, I may have formulated my query incorrectly.

There are some super smart people hanging around here... while might take a bit to get their attention, it is well worth the wait.
