I have a client who asked if we could get some tracking metrics on a few competitor sites. I'd love to hear what the possibilities are, the ethical ramifications, etc.

To my knowledge, it is illegal to access other people's stats ... but I could be wrong. Its a bit like the current discussion about the WIFI user who tapped into someone else's network. If you leave the door open then ...
However, if access is closed, you may not access the stats.
