Strong increase in visits

Over all sites we detect a strong increase in visits last month. Why?

We run a few websites, and have seen an about 40% increase in visitor traffic over all domains using our CMS over the last month. Some even duplicated their visits. We see slight (but no comparable) improvement in Rankings, but yes, a fairly higher traffic from google Imageserach. But sites are not image related at all.

Basically this would be good news, but I'm a bit paranoid about scraper scripts or other "bad things" as leads did rise, but by far not in the same extend, and this is over all domains experienced.

Did anybody else experience such a "strange" rise?

Have a good look at your logs and see if the traffic increase is from a consistent referrer... like a big search engine :)

Do you have any reports that help you quickly identify where increased traffic is coming from?

For example, just displaying the ratio of pages served to unique IP addresses can be a simple way to detect that most likely a (possibly unidentified) spider has run amok.
