A new survey that should surprise only the people behind the Beacon debacle shows that a majority of Americans of all ages don’t like being tracked online by advertisers.

Survey [graphics8.nytimes.com]

...most adult Americans (66%) do not want marketers to
tailor advertisements to their interests. Moreover, when Americans are informed of three common ways that marketers gather data about people in order to tailor ads, even higher percentages—between 73% and 86%--say they would not want such advertising.

While privacy advocates have lambasted behavioral targeting for tracking and labeling people in ways they do not know or understand, marketers have defended the practice by insisting it gives Americans what they want: advertisements and other forms of content that are as relevant to their lives as possible.

After seeing the first link and absoutely loving the picture 'Iz huntin wabbits'

This whole debate sums up the real problem - 95%+ of people just don't have a #*$!ing clue about how their activity is tracked on the internet. Ask them the question face to face and they don't like it being done - Ask them 'What measures are you taking to prevent your internet activity being tracked?' they will answer 'None!'

The average joe doesn't understand something so his immediate reaction is that he doesn't like it. Does he do #*$! all about it - not a chance because he he hasn't got a clue and in most cases can't be #*$!ing bothered to get one either.

Is true ..on or off line ..

IME ..the percentage may very well be considerably greater ..and applies to all other nations / societies .

Yes I had no intention of making a particular statement about Americans - it is as true in my own country and pretty much every country in the world.

No one really thinks about all these membership and bonus cards you get in shops. They are not only used to bring you back into the shop, but also for tracking your purchases and therefore your interests.
If you are really paranoid about being tracked, then get rid of these cards.

Personally I don't have any store cards - just for the reason you mention onlineleben - also when shopping I take cash out of the bank first rather than use a credit or debit card in a store.

It will be one of those things that will one day be an issue. Right now everyone says they don't want it but they also don't understand it. Just like no one seemed to care much about spam and spyware until they became massive.
