Google Optimizer, A/B Testing and SEO

Is there a way to A/B test and retain exact urls?

Hi guys. I am using Google optimizer to A/B test pages on a ranking website. The issue I am finding, like others have, is that the second page is name differently than the first for the page swap. The second page uses a link canonical tag to point Google at the first page, so that Google understands that the original page (which shows 50% of the time) is the correct url.

Still, rankings have been falling for this url only since the change.

Is there a way to set this up as a content block so that a named area on the page is swapped out during Google Optimizer testing, but the actual page url stays the same?

How does googlebot even find the 2nd page? GWO page switching runs off javascript so gbot should never see or know about page 2.

You can use another way for optimization.
