On our site visitors will hang around for a while, and revisit the site a bunch of times before converting.

If I have understood it correctly, Analytics will only show the source URL of a visitor if the conversion is done the first visit /session.

In other words if a visitor finds our site through google, bookmarks it, and converts next time he/she accesses our site though the bookmark, we won't be able to know that this visitor found us through google. (al though the visitor uses the same cookie/computer as for the first visit)

Have I understood this correctly? If so, is there any other statistics service that allows us to track the "original" source of a conversion.

Thanks!

I don't think, but you can set cookies at user system to track, you will need to do some programming work for this.
