Google Analytics -- Is the UA # supposed to be static?

I have a Google Analytics account (just ONE, as far as I know) and I've seen the UA number change twice in the past two months. Every time it changes, of course, the stats stop recording, since the code on the site no longer matches what's in the account.

I understood that this number doesn't change, as it is unique to my account. This doesn't seem to be the case. Someone on another forum suggested that I've logged into the wrong GA account. That makes no sense to me either.

Has anyone encountered this before?

Yes ive just had this problem today - have around 30 accounts in Google Analytics but just this one account has had the UA# changed at some point in the last two weeks?

Surely we arent meant to check each account every day incase they have changed the UA#?

In what way does it change; and is it the whole number or just the final

the whole number, just checked today and the tracking is working again since I amended the code on the site? very strange?
