Google Analytics - Update tracking code when file is updated?

We launched a new web site last month and immediately started a profile for it on Google Analytics. For weeks, the traffic stats had been appearing without any issue.

Today, I logged in to find that there's no data anymore. All zeros. No visits. No nothing.

In searching around, I saw a quick mention on a forum that you need to update the Google tracking code every time you update the file on which that code resides. Can anyone here confirm? Also, if that IS correct, does anyone know whether the data previously collected can be retrieved?

That part is false. Can't help with the other part, luckily I've never had data stop reporting.
