I am currently using statcounter.com (free version) to analyse what visitors come to my site. However, it cannot report what robots are hitting my site. Do you know any free tool that can do this?

Do you have access to your logs? You could run them through a free analyzer. Or find a host that includes an online stats package like AWStats.

Unfortunately I dont have access to my logs and my host does not provide stats package. Help! I could change host but am relunctant to because I am on an academic domain/host which has various advantages with the way the goolge algorithms work - they tend to favour academic websites.

Using a php (or asp) script in your files, you can easily track robots and store the results in a database. Look for free php script to spot robots or to track robots and search engines.

AWStats is what you should probably use.
