AWStats - how accurate is 'Add to favorites'?

Is now 26% for this month - very flattering, but...

October's estimate was 8.5 %, and Sept was 7.2 %. That seems reasonable, but 26% seems off the wall.

I really do not have the time to trawl through the code to find the algo used to estimate it, and hoped that someone here may have some hands-on experience of where it comes from.

Based on re-factored IE stats... IE is 84.5 % on my site, so should be reasonably accurate. Checked just now with ie6, and the address bar does not show favicon, and no trace in the log under my IP.

The last thread I recall about this topic was this one: How many visitors bookmark your site [webmasterworld.com]. The consensus then was that tracking access to the favicon.ico file was not the most accurate figure anymore.

Firefox always requests the favicon.ico, no matter if you bookmark a site or not, the favicon.ico will always appear in the adress bar.

My guess is IE7 will do the same, so looking at the favicon.ico is probably going to be even more unreliable.

Yes, but AWStats uses re-factored IE stats, so is not affected by that (we are re-hashing messages in the earlier link given by bill).

The figure keeps rising, and is currently 32.8% for December.

Something, in some browser somewhere, has changed, and is rendering the AWStats algorithm inaccurate. Would be good to know which browser, and what.
