Why do page views jump when a Dimension is set?

The dimension drilldown function is producing strange results

In "Top Content", one of my pages shows as 2,919 pageviews.

Click on that page and you're taken to a page called "Content Detail" where, under the graph, it says "This page was viewed 2,919 times". So far, so good.

"Analyze" is set to "Content Detail" and Dimension is set to "None".

Now change the Dimension to something else, e.g "Language" and we get:
"This page was visited 18,314 times via 15 languages"
...or change the Dimension to "Continent" and we get:
"This page was visited 18,314 times via 6 continents"
...and so on. Under the various Dimensions, the page was visited 18,314 times. But with no Dimension set, "This page was viewed 2,919 times".

The same pattern (with different numbers) happens on all pages.

Can someone explain?

Are you talking about Google Analytics, or one of the other analytics tools that has dimensions?

Oh dear - sheer stupidity there on my part. Yes, Google Analytics. Apologies.
