How to track user behavior

My users contact trhough many pages in my site trhoug email links. Since I can know what user bought, based on received emails, I'd like to determine how users came to my page before clicking to send an email, if they come from Adwords or other PPC engine, then I'd like to see where it was shown the ad.
I guess what I want is just tracking conversions to determine ROI and then make my campaign "smarter". I guess is there a lot of alternatives to do so (didn't have any success using the Google Adwords code there so probably third party solutions are what I'm looking for)

Can you recommend some? (or sticky?)

If you are able to use server side scripting you could build your own tracker very easy, I use php for mine nad the following idea.

1. All my campain links (regardless of PPC, email, etc), point to the same URL 'with' parameters. like http://www.example.com/redircamp.php?campid=123&type=abc&url=http://www.example.com/widgets.html

2. Of course redircamp.php has some code inside which dumps to a MySQL table many http data like referral, date, time, query url etc. And then redirects to the 'url' parameter.

3. Build your own reports using the data that you save.

You can check into Google Analytics which I think can trace campains also and give you all the data ;-).

I am using a free script which does a great job in tracking visitor movement. It's a hidden php counter that shows referring URLs and ip addresses. Please feel free to sticky me if you would like the URL.

Do you use your actual email address on the pages or do you use a cgi script to send the email? If you use a script you can pass it through by adding header variable to the URL.
