Since January we have seen a significant decrease in hits to our website. We are trying to find out why this has happened and how to resolve it...

We have implemented a major revamp to the site, and now want to work the next stage of the project ie get the hits and conversion rates back up...

Has anyone got any tips or hints that they would care to share?

Thanks in advance

Noel

Welcome to the forums, etpint.

I'd say don't do anything without a thorough analysis of the recent logs. Changes made just because you "need to do something" can be a cure that's worse than the disease.

What kind of traffic is off? Search engine hits? Is it the number of keywords that fell off, or one particular search engine?

Or is it type-in traffic that fell off? Was there a change in off the web marketing? Did some significant link traffic get removed?

Are conversions really down as a percent, or just as a total number?

All those kinds of questions, and then more as you drill down into the logs. You've got to clearly define the situation before you can revise anything fruitfully.

Don't shoot from the hip - you've got important parts of your own anatomy very close by!

Thanks Tedster.

In the log analysis we have seen that hits from cross linked sites has been down. Search engine hits appear to be static for google, but where we would have seen some activity from engines such as Northern Light etc there is no activity.

I have seen an increased ranking for a local competitor, whilst ours has fallen... Having looked at their site and noticed a distinct lack of keywords and even site description I am now actually lost as to what we are doing wrong :)

Hi etpint,

tedster is quite right, making changes out of desperation could be counterproductive to what the ultimate goal might be. I have had the same thing happen the past three weeks, business is down from a level where I could barely deal with it a month ago to next to nothing now.

I am in tourism and it is not unusual to have lulls from time to time in my industry. Our site has excellent placement on most search engines, so I plan to do nothing and concentrate on getting other things done which I normally don't have time for.

It really depends upon your industry. Do you think it really is a problem with the web site or is it possible that people are just outside cleaning up their yards and enjoying a little bit of spring rather than cruising the internet for your products?

Don't do anything drastic without looking at the other possibilities. One thing I will warn you of which happened to me not to long ago ... check your inquiry form or e:mail address. I had a corrupted file for at least a week, but figured it was a seasonal lull. It wasn't! People were getting error codes when submitting the form!!! YIKES!

Needless to say, I now test the form at least once a day when traffic falls off just to be sure everything is AOK. :)

Welcome, etpint. You mentioned that you did a major site revamp - did you change page names? If so, check your error logs to see if some of your referrals are going to places that don't exist any longer. If so, you should replace the popular pages with new content, put in a redirect of some kind, or at least do a very good custom 404 page.
