I wonder if somebody could guide us as new users of WebTrends on Demand as to how to create external files containing the javascript Tag as an alternative to placing the code on the page?
Obviously, we have tried just creating an external .js file of the Tag but we are told be the Reseller that it's a lot more complex than this. To be honest, they want to charge us a significant amount of money just to create the external files to get our new site up and running, which I am disappointed about.
Any help appreciated.
Educate yourself about the various versions of the tags. The one to pay attention to (the most advanced one) is available at tagbuilder.webtrends.com. It appears that the WebTrends people have been working hard at making things a lot easier.
You do have to have some inline code on your page or footer for browsers that do not use javascript. Other than that, the main tag code is, as you say, able to be referenced by an include.
Some older versions of the WebTrends tag had to be split into three parts - you had to get a tag from the WebTrends GUI then chop it up, put part of it inline, then have two includes. The documentation for this, including the dividing of the file, was not very clear. All that has changed. Check the tagbuilder page and the documentation.
It's possible that there's something exceptional about your site that is making your reseller correctly say it is complicated.
As far as I know, we have the most up to date version of WebTrends On Demand, so don't think it's an old version. However, we are being told cryptically from the reseller we need to create 3 files from the GUI as you describe.
The site is actually very simple - no e-commnerce, user registrations - all content. I will have a look at the tagbuilder you suggested.
Thanks again
BTW If you go to the WebTrends user forum (forums.webtrends.com) somebody could send you the instruction sheet for chopping up the older tag. Copies are found on SDC servers as txt files, so people running SDC servers will be more likely to know about it. I don't want to criticize an unnamed reseller any more than I indirectly have ...
I have registered on the Forum and asked for some help. I was told by the reseller that the process of splitting the files should take 4 hours. I am at a loss as to why WT doesn't provide an option from within the GUI to perform this operation - it seems capable of doing so much more than this.
The main problem I am having, even when viewing an animated tour of how to do this, is my code looks nothing like the sample code.
I am even considering cutting my losses and going for something with 75% of WT's power, but with a bit more user-friendliness and hopefully some better support.
