I have been looking at a program which adds links in other websites referal logs

Does this kind of tactic still work today or is it old hat?

So it works then?

Yes: it works us all up. Especially my acquaintance Luigi, who - when he's not mailing live spiders to the residential addresses of known email spammers - takes time out from his busy schedule to instruct referer manipulators in a very novel form of poker.

it's just old school log spamming

I don't know how much it works anymore, people still do it a lot but hey, people should know better than to leave their logs open for public view

I am not sure if it even works anymore - surely google would just ignore the links in logs by now?

Should these show up as backlinks using the link command - if so I have never seen one!

cheers

etrader...my site is being spammed and my logs are not open to the public...i wish i could put my hands on the spammers neck! it makes site logging and tracking irrelevant! so please don't promote your business on the expense of other sites!

Its a dangerous tactic.
If you want to get blacklisted, do it and apply for google adsense.

mmmm? So I'm thinking this is happening to me?

I have a site that is just a couple few months new and the stats from Webalizer are being password protected as of now reading this thread.

Stats show referrals from about 5,000 chinese sites. I also use a free 3rd party stats service and none of these show up there?

I have tried translation tools on a number of these sites to see if anything about my site is on theirs and I can't find anything.

So do I password protect and down the road let these sites filter away? Or could it be something else?

I do run an rss feed about latest news on the site and what not... Could they maybe be rss bot sites?

Anyone experience this or have some feedback?

Thanks guys...

You can also exclude that directory or those files in your robot.txt.

if your stats are password protected than you are the only one who sees the referral spam....

The log-spam that show up in my logs is so obviously crappy that Google would be crazy
NOT to penalize those sites. My only question is whether they can distinguish
between log spam and legitimate visits. -Larry

Aircut...My stats were not password protected. I meant after reading that etrader who wants to do log spam and trying to figure out all my weird fake referrals that it's time to password protect now.
