This may be a basic question, but can anyone tell me why it's reporting 404 page not found errors for pages I don't have on my site. I've never created a link to these page titles, but it seems to want to crawl them.

What does this mean?

I only can give you a basic answer to this:

check

www.archive.org

if someone in the past has registered the web-name you use today. You then find the answer. There are search engines calling old and not longer existant pages for years...

Thanks, but I'm afraid I'm the only one who has ever owned the domain name...almost 9 years now.

Some of them look like an old clickbank type extension...I've never had these on my site...ever.

Oh, does it mean that someone is looking at my site for these pages and they are not available, or does it mean when Google crawls my site they are somewhere on it but don't link to anything?

Sorry if this is ignorant...I'm just not getting what the benefit of knowing this information is:)

You should probably be asking this question over in the Spiders and Crawlers forum.

I do have log entries like:

/home/httpd/vhosts/sample.com/httpdocs/admin
/home/httpd/vhosts/sample.com/httpdocs/admin_upfile.asp
/home/httpd/vhosts/sample.com/httpdocs/user_upfile.asp
/home/httpd/vhosts/sample.com/httpdocs/upload_flash.asp
/home/httpd/vhosts/sample.com/httpdocs/Saveannounce_upload.asp
/home/httpd/vhosts/sample.com/httpdocs/UploadFace.asp
/home/httpd/vhosts/sample.com/httpdocs/bbs
/home/httpd/vhosts/sample.com/httpdocs/UploadSoft
/home/httpd/vhosts/sample.com/httpdocs/diy.asp
/home/httpd/vhosts/sample.com/httpdocs/upload
/home/httpd/vhosts/sample.com/httpdocs/mybbs
/home/httpd/vhosts/sample.com/httpdocs/dxxobbs
/home/httpd/vhosts/sample.com/httpdocs/img_upfile.asp

on a regular scedule. They come usually from Site Scanners, using commonly used file names&extensions taken out of Forums, Guestbooks, e.t.c. or then generally used by many peoples.

As a matter of Fact, I just had a bit of them today over my Website, when I checked for a sample to show you.

If you have nothing to hide anywhere on your Site, don't worry, they are not of any harm to your Site, they are against the Server you're hosted on only....

usually they are looking for "footprints" on your site that would indicate possible vulnerabilities to be exploited later.
