My main question is about privacy. Today while working I had a thought: In the first tab of my browser, I opened up and then logged into a friend's site that I know is running from a server he physically owns. I kept that tab open and remained logged in.
Then I started opening up other tabs in my browser, which is FireFox, btw. I browsed around, did my thing, and then had a semi-chilling thought -- "Hey, is it possible that by being logged into his server, it would be possible that his server (on one tab) could be somehow tracking what I'm browsing/opening up/viewing in other tabs?"
I guess I began to think of it as sort of referral logs, but in reverse. In a referral log, I think you can see where someone came from and how. In this case, i wondered if somehow the places you were going while inside the browsers other tabs could be somehow tracked by a given site.
I guess I'm a little paranoid. Can I take the tinfoil hat off?
There is probably some terrific malware out there that watches what you do and sends info to a server somewhere, but it's probably not going to be your friend's site.
You can be pretty sure of what's going on by downloading a free program called Fiddler (there are others) and having it list every single bit of info that goes out with each click, and where it goes.
The only thing I know of in the "legitimate" online world that regularly sends information about your browsing, no matter where you go, is the Google Toolbar. It's creepy to use Fiddler to watch what it does while you browse.
Thank you also for the information about fiddler. It sounds pretty interesting. I could also recreate my browsing to see how acts.
Need a used tinfoil hat?
