Why would my own site be listed as a referring site? would this be because the user timed out perhaps while reading a page or just had to run get a soda or go to the bathroom or something... then clicked on a page already open in his browser?

That's basically the way things work. "Referrer" doesn't differentiate between external and internal. If a visitor clicks a link on one of your pages to another of your pages, the referrer is the page with the link.
