Capturing user's computer name

script or activex?

I am trying to find a script or other method that I can use to automatically place the user's computer name from a page on our site. The page is an enrollment form that is sent to our email.
Is this possible with just a script or do I need an activex downloaded to their computer. If using an activex how would it be implemented to fill in that information to the form.
I need this for comparison and tracking for when they download and use our program on their computer interacting with our server. Prefer not having to set up a separate database also. This is for use on the internet not an intranet
Don't know if this belongs in this section, if not will the mod please move to the proper one?

Not sure you can grab the computer name or mac address. IP obviously isn't the best, either. I would do a combination of things, like store IP and require an email address. If either of these were used in the past then obviously you know that they were there before.

Do a search at WebmasterWorld, too, as there are some threads that discuss this topic already.

A G search for:

active x computer name

comes up with ocx files that will do what you need - but why would any user install them for you?

Thanks for the info. I found one activex app that will collect much more info than we need. I am contacting support to find out if it can be customized.
As for the question as to why they would download it?
We do remote monitoring of their computer and they are required to do what we request.
I would just put it in the form for them to fill in but I am afraid most would have a large margin for error filling this in and we need it for the reporting process.
Still looking for a simpler answer but this may be it.
