In a word, redirection.

More often than not a virtual url can be defined as an alias for a resource. For example, rather than have a weird name that doesn't mean much like this ...

www.example.com/news/articles.cgi?articleID=123456789

... we can give it a descriptive name such as ...
www.example.com/news/what-are-virtual-urls

With a little bit of server-side processing we can tell the server to deliver the resource content found at the former path whenever a user requests the latter resource.
