Thus far this month I've blocked 15.5% of my traffic with an HTTP 403 though my statistics script reports it as high as 24.6%. The vast majority of this is intentional, some automated and some manual.

What general rates of blocking are others seeing on their sites? What is the ratio between manual and automated?

This month I have blocked 0.03% of my traffic with a 403 error. Mainly caused by bots looking for vulnerabilities and hitting automated traps.

In most cased I prefer to firewall abusers out with iptables. Much less load on the server and a higher chance that people stop with their actions. A 403 error may make them angry and ask for more action from their side, but when my server doesn't respond because my firewall drops their requests, they think they succeeded in taking my server down and move to another victim.
