Hi,

It's my first post. I believe that will be not the last.

I want to integrate Webtrends in our Websites. The sites are made in asp. Our activities are in insurrance.

My question: I want to convey to my manager how much time we could spend to integrate Webtrends basic functionnality for four sites with a basic installation.

Thanks for your feedback in advance.

WebTrends no longer has an easily downloaded trial version. Do a Request Information on the site and they will arrange it.

Regarding how long ---- the site tagging is simple; same tag on all pages. If you have a footer or some other common element on all pages (allowing you to place the code just once) then the tagging can be done in moments.

If any pages need to collect special information, such as revenue on a receipt page, the tag doesn't change but the page code will need some tweaking to get the revenue into a special part of the page <head>.

The tag itself has some advanced features that can be turned on and off and you might want to get some advice if you want to automatically track pdf & other downloads, mailto: events, clicks on links that go offsite, clicks on Submit buttons on forms, and so on. Again, the tag doesn't change and you don't have to add code to these links/actions on the page, but you have to tell the tag whether to track these.

Regarding setting up the basic out of the box reports --- if you are using the software rather than the service, and if you have the software installed and ready to go, it's just a matter of telling WebTrends where to look for the logs and telling it to start analyzing.

Installing the current software is usually hassle free but do your homework about machine specifications and don't take shortcuts or skimp on the hardware.

That's the good news for a best-case situation.

The realistic news is that your site may not be as simple as you think it is, the out of the box reports may not be enough, and having four sites raises questions of whether you want to track the same visitor across these sites or keep them separate. Also, inexperience will slow down anybody with this product (or just about any analytics product). It can be incredibly frustrating to somebody who expects it to be smarter than they are or to read minds. On this forum you can find complaints from people who were quick to blame the product when they hadn't done their homework (and lots of legitimate questions and complaints too, of course). Still, the choice to use software instead of the service allows you to go back and re-analyze, i.e. learn and repair. Remember that there are people who do this full-time and still think they have more to learn!

The WebTrends site has lists of third parties that can act as consultants to get you set up quickly and ready to enter the learning phase, so you might want to look at that list. I think it's called WebTrends Intelligence Network Partners, or WIN Partners. You can also find good freelancers on the Web Analytics Association web site or just by asking around.

Good luck.

Oh, and once you have a trial license, you can get into the WT User Forum on the WebTrends site which will have many experienced and helpful users and a wealth of information in old posts.
