I am currently using both AWStats and Webalizer for my sites. I am finding them pretty plain in terms data. Can anyone recommend a replacement service which is not associated with Google or Microsoft, which is opensource and/or free?

Search on: free web stats

AFAIK most of those work by having tiered programs - track last 100 visitors for free, unlimited visitors for X/month. The problem of course is that for anything but the lowest-traffic site, 100 visitors is not even a day's worth of traffic.

Of course, if you are looking at stats based on your log files, there are free and open sources packages to crunch the numbers, but that's quite a different data set than what google offers.

I just do not want Google (or Microshaft, Yagoo, etc) looking at my data. I know, I am a little paranoid. I just want to see where the referring URLs are coming from. I can download my logs and view them from a viewer. Can you recommend any?

You could try Funnel Web Analyzer which is free. It gives you more information than AWStats, such as top paths through your site, but not as much as Google Analytics will.

You should consider GoStats. (no limits to your data rate per month. There is a Pro version reasonably priced)
