Uptime Monitoring

Why would someone monitor my site?

Ok, I'm really confused. I was doing my usual log reports and noticed something new and different. I'm getting hits from an uptime monitoring service for a page on my site. Its not the main page, but it is the top page for a subsection.

Its only checking once an hour - and only doing a HEAD - so not using a significant amount of bandwidth.

I little background on the site: its an information site, no e-commerce, but does have some adsense.

My only question: who is paying to monitor whether or not that part of my site is up and, more importantly, why would they do it?

Any ideas?

2 possible causes:

1. The monitor service itself is collecting stats for your site in prep for that impressive sales email that you'll be getting from them.

2. Someone could have submitted one of your pages as a prank.

Usually, if you contact them they'll stop. If not, ban their IP/UA.

Maybe somebody links to your page, and THEY hired a monitoring
service to check for dead links or updated content? -Larry

hehe, if it is someone looking for dead links then its the most proactive site I've ever seen (checking every hour :-)

Oh well, its not causing any problems and I guess I get free uptime stats for a while :-)
