How do they find out?

Good morning,
just curious how Gogle Analytics dertermines the connection speed.

For my country (Germany) I get just below 30% each for DSL and Dialup, although I heard that DSL is what most use by now (around 70%).

Thanks for any explanations on how the small tracking code makes it possible to find out so much.

In Windows, Control Panel's Network Connection settings include a Type. Google's (and other tracking programs) javascript queries the visitor's machine for this internal information. Similar queries ask the visitor's machine about its screen resolution settings and so on.

Thanks for the reply.
Would this mean that all windows users set up on a LAN with e.g. 100 Mb but connecting to the net with say 1 Mb (from Router to net) would get reported as 100 Mb (if there were such a category)?
