If I sign up with Google Webmaster tools, will I basically be telling google "Hey - I have 8 sites selling the same stuff, the content is almost the same, so let's penalize all but 1 site, thus killing all but 1 site."
I read in another thread that "its us against Google" - i agree with this somewhat, and am hesitant to further assist google in tellng them that I've got several sites selling the same thing. I am worried that they are looking at this user information and using it to help filter return results.
Any thought on this guys?

I don't think Google cares enough about what you are doing to risk its reputation or possible legal consequences or the other fallout that would come from violating its own public statements about what it does. Google is in business to make money which means it needs people (and regulatory agencies) to trust that it does what it says it does. A large company like that isn't going to put that trust on the line just to make its index a little better by de-ranking people like you.
And if Google is as scary as people think it is, Google will figure out what you're doing at some point, even without the webmaster tools angle.
