Tracking adwords clicks coming from adsense

Dear experts,

If you advertise on the adwords content network then you are likely to see *pagead2.googlesyndication.com* as the referrer on some content clicks. I understand that these are clicks coming from sites registered on the adsense programme. What I've noticed though is that sometimes I'm getting the actual referrer in the server logs (the url of the page where the content ad was displayed) and sometimes it's only pagead2...

Could someone explain what the reason for this might be?

Just to clarify:

What I meant was that sometimes the referrer on the click is the actual web page where the ad was displayed while sometimes the referrer is contained within the *pagead2* string as a parameter (&ref=). Wondering why this happens.

How do we get the actual referring site from that site instead of seeing googlesyndication as the referrer? Is there a variable available from google that we can pass? I also notice that sometimes the actual referrer is shown and not googlesyndication.
