Hi,

Is it necessary to have root access to a webserver to install awstats?

I am with a webhosting company and just have ftp access to my website. Is it still possible to install awstats?

Also, does anyone know if there is an "easy" installation instruction for awstats somewhere on the net? Everything I found so far is diving into all the tiny details right from the beginning (which are important but I do not even know where to start)

Thanks!
Benni

It is not necessary to have root access to a web server to install AWSTATS I haven’t be able to find good instructions anywhere to install it and I know pretty much nothing about CGI or perl but I still managed to do it (and even got geoipfree installed). Just download it. copy it over to your web server and start trying to use it through trail and error such as going to http://www.example.mydomain/awstats/awstats.pl?config=myvirtualhostname

I know this isn’t the most detailed installation post but you’ll find if you just read the docs and play around with you’ll do it!

Thanks for the answere. That was the piece of information (no root access necessary, just moving & adjusting files) I was looking for and will me get started.

Thx again!

sorry for bringing the old thread up again ... I just started the awstats installation by moving files & set the configuration. (no root access). Works good so far.

However, it seems to me that I still would need root access to get a script in place which would update the awstats data!? Otherwise I'd need to do a manual update EVERY DAY in order to get that day's Logs into the awstats data. If I don't do the updates, I loose the Logs for that day :-( unless I set the date in the config-file manually, then do the update, then change the date to the next day and so on.

Sounds rather unpractical, or did I miss something?
