Need Cheap Prog to Read WebTrends Log Files

My customer's hosting company (undestandably) deletes the Webtrends log files every 60 days. I suggested they download the html log files (thousands of files and folders) that Webtrends generates so that periods exceeding 60 days can be analyzed (all of them to start and then monthly, overwriting only the previous month such as the "m03" or March folder). Is there an inexpensive program that would enable me and them to view quarterly, annual, etc. reports from what will become local folders?

I assume you are talking about WebTrends reports and not WebTrends "log files"? If so, it sounds like what you need is a simple HTML web page that just lists each year, month, week, etc. with each link pointing to its respective report folder.

Or you could get an old matching version of WebTrends for not very much money and have its calendar point to the downloaded folders, because they'll be pre-arranged the way WebTrends needs them to be. Sounds like they're using an old Log Analyzer version.

However, and I'm not being sarcastic, $100 paid to the hosting company would allow them to buy a really big hard disk for your account that would hold all reports for the next 50 years or so. Hard disk space is so cheap, and those WT report files are small.

Unfortunately, Interland is not being very helpful. The tech support supervisor I spoke with referred to the files and folders as "log files". These are files created in a directory named "reports" (Again, thousands of HTML files and hundreds of folders).

The HTML files do not seem to have any obvious directory file, so designing an HTML page to sort it all out seems impossible, if not simply impractical in this case. No single page that I have found shows anything of importance.

When I suggested the hard drive idea, the guy laughed and basically told me that large companies like them will not just stop deleting the reports, although they would gladly sell more server space. At least he was honest.

What do most companies do in a case where their site is hosted externally on a shared server and want to view annual webstats and create reports?

Those files would be the actual webtrends report files. Unfortunatly there isn't much you could do with them except download them all and try to construct links to approriate file. If interland is using one of the newer versions of WebTrends Reporting Center then you may be out of luck since much of the files are dynamically creating during report viewing.

However interland almost always gives access to some of your actual raw log data, but they do not like to volunteer that information.

I would recommend contacting interland support again and requesting access to the raw log data so you can download it and run your own reports using WebTrends or any other analytics software you desire. This is what most companies and individuals in your situation normally end up doing.
