tracking pdf downloads

A friend wants to track number of people who download PDF's using Google's tracking code.

He wants to make it as easy as possible for people to download the PDF's, so wants to use stragiht links. The question then is where to put the tracking code.

I suggested uisng an onClick handler with the link to load an iFrame. I'm pretty sure this will work well, but I was wondering if people had other suggestions.

What would be really nice, and I haven't thought through how to do, is trigger the tracking code after the PDF has finished loading than at the start.
