Tracking Server Uptime

Hi all,

I have embarked upon a new project taking over an existing site and it seems that often when I try to access the site, it's down or inaccessable.

I imagine that such a thing would not show under any sort of Cpanel "failure" reporting.

Is there a way, or what is the best way to get data on server downtime?

I imagine the host has this information but I don't know if they would make it available to clients, it's probably a closely guarded secret.

Thanks for your time,

Ken

Try NetCraft:

[uptime.netcraft.com...]

Try a Google search for 'server monitoring'.

I use a UK company with an obvious name - take a look at the adwords ads for that search :) - and they've been good, over the last two years or so.

I also use it to send me an SMS if the site goes down.

Only thing that doesn't work as I'd like is that my ISP won't accept automatic emails from the monitoring service as support requests, which is a shame.

Best wishes,
Andy.

Thanks for your input dcrombie and andye.

Ha, I can see where a host would avoid this like the plague.

I am just looking to confirm my suspicions that this host has issues so I can confidently recommend a change.

With regard to Netcraft, I had some trouble finding a breakdown of their services but I did find something plus I mailed them to get clarification.

I saw the "adwords" in the Google search but there is a whole list there, am I to assume it's the first one?

PM me with any input that would not be appropriate for the open forum.

Thanks again!
