Hi,

I saw two sites (looks like the same people) that have put my Awstats in their page in the following way

<iframe height=1 width=1 border=0 src="tracker.php?aid=&page=Front&url=http://www.mysite.com/cgi-bin/awstats.cgi?framename=mainright&update=1&cid="></iframe>

What does this mean? Why would they do that? Is this hurting me? Are they tring to ride on our site's reputation? The thing is that on their page nothing is shown, but only if you do "View source" then you see this code.

is any of these site appearing in your Awstats as a referrer? if so they may try to get a free backlink from you.

Simply password protect the directory awstats sits in to avoid further similar 'problems'

That's exactly correct. They appear as a referer in my Awstats.

My awstats is password protected, but not the directory, but when I have to access my AWstats to see it, it is password protected. Are these two different things? I guess, because they still appear on my awstats as referer and I don't want to give links to these kind of sites.

Any other comments?

password protect the direcoty rather that to have a login page. I guess that if you were to try and access awstats directly to the address you get once logged in, you can see it?

Ok, I see

What I am also saying is that do they have the right to do this?

I can't get them remove it. What actions can I take?

if you password protect your directory you could just forget about it they won't gain anything by linking to you, as for the legal action, legal recourse - I am not sure may be a DMCA or a C&D letter.

Oh Sorry, just one more question.

How do you password protect a directory? Is it quite simple?

Is it done through FTP? If yes how?

its done via your web hosting software (Apache or IIS) For IIS you right click on the site (or directory) bring up properties, go to the Directory Security tab, uncheck anonymous access and you can add users with permissions via the Server Management Control Box.
