You could do what the spammers do and put a little 1x1 tracking image in the e-mail message. The only problem is that you would only see those who actually read the messages and those who have HTML enabled.

just curious, does anyone have/suggest a script that does this? it would be really useful to verify that you email has be read? but what happens when HTML is diabled?

Most mailing list scripts allow you to do some sort of tracking. Check Hotscripts and see if you can find what you're after.

If HTML is turned off, the tracking won't work for that recipient. This can skew your numbers. But, unless you're going to a pretty tech-savvy crowd, this isn't likely to be a big problem. Besides, there's no way around it.

There are also people who receive the mail but who don't read the mail :)
