what is 'good traffic'

Hi All,
Just out of curiousity. What do some of you define as a website with good traffic. How many visitors a day.
I know, it all depends on what the site is offering as well. But , lets assume an average site about an average popular topic/product. Webmaster is trying to optimize site to rank for reasonable traffic key phrases (100+ in goto.com keywordtool, is this rasonable?) At what level of visitors would you consider it to be succesful?

This question is not about who has the biggest, best etc. I'd like to find out when a website is generating traffic that is more than your random noise, lucky hits.

Much depends on how targeted your traffic is and how well it converts. I have one site that averages 4,000 uniques per month but the conversion rate (hotel bookings) is high enough that it generated low 5-digit income in it's first year.

Another general interest content site didn't really raise much interest from banner advertisers until it moved into the millions of pageviews per year. As a sort of standard, Engage had/has(?) a minimum threshold of 250,000 pageviews per month for their publishers.

If you're talking about bidding on 100 kws, that's reasonable, I guess. Though I suspect Mike Mackin will tell you that it becomes an administrative burden to aggressively/properly manage large numbers of keys.

If you're trying to go for that many keys on spidering engines, I think it will dilute the effectiveness too much -particularly when you consider themes (which needs a nice, tight grouping of keys).

I have one site that generates around 3000 uniques a month for my client and they are ecstatic about it. It really depends on the site and revenue model. If you are happy with your traffic and making a few bucks then I would argue that the site is successful. I think to a large degree success is in the eye of webmaster.

Sorry, I was a bit vague here. Perhaps topic for new discussion. I refer to goto.com keyword suggestion tool. I have pages in top 10 for keyphrases that are reported to be searched for close to 100 times a month and get hardly any traffic on those key phrase. At what level does this keyword tool become reliable?

Your absolutely right of course, success is in the eye of the webmaster/client. I'm trying to get handle of the "real size" of internet traffic. Of course it depends on demographics, product on offer etc etc.

I have one site attracting 10/visits a day, not optimized at all.
Another site with many pages attracks same traffic but is optimized for a few keyphrase but problem here is to find keyphrases that are 'searched for' and at same time are 'relevant'.

I suspect that both sites are still operating in the noise levels. When is traffic on a website really rising above the noise is what I'd like to know.

Another site now running for two months is approaching 80/day, I'm happy and siteowner is happy - I guess that should be enough.

it seems that the underlying point is that it depends on how targeted your site is. If you target a small but cash rich market segment, and predominate web expsoure through Se's and directories in that area, even a small number of uniques will attract advertising from highly targeted advertisers.

We have 3 sites, the broadest has 3,000 unqiues a day and we have good ad clients. Even our two newest with about 500 unqiues a day are very targeted and we get good interest in people having either a banner or a "intergrated content" presence on these sites.

Agree for a very broad site which has mass appeal, you need many many more uniques as it is a given that if you are, many others will have the same idea too, and you will have to share ad revenue with others.
