This came up a while ago... what you're seeing is caused by "lazy" proxies filtering out the referrer headers in the name of privacy.

Instead of just erasing the header completely and then working out how large the new request is, the proxy simply anonomizes the referrer header letter for letter.

Because doing it like this doesn't change the request size there is no need for extra programming to handle the recalculation and update, thus making life easier for whoever programmed it.
