65.94.2X0.219 just appeared on one of my sites, read the robots.txt file and then took everything (less than 150 pages)in one gulp. I can't find this IP searching WebmasterWorld or using plain Google. I'm just curious as to who this is. Does anybody know?

rharri,

Try using ARIN [arin.net]. This is a Bell Nexia dial-up user.

For Europe and parts of the middle east, use RIPE [ripe.net]. For Asia/Pacific Rim, use APNIC [apnic.net]. Japan, Korea, and several other countries have "national" IP address lookups, as well.

Then you can use Tracert (Trace Route, a built-in DOS utility under Windows) if you want to dig a little deeper.

You might also want to investigate user-agent blocking and scripts that you can use to trap bad robots and limit the number of files downloaded in a short period of time. These subjects are well-covered here at WebmasterWorld.

Sorry about the UTC. I've been here long enough to know better.

I was so convinced it was a 'bot I didn't think to do a whois. I guess someone just downloaded my site (but why pull the robots.txt?).

Thanks for all the info and again, apologies for the IP.

There are tools that do whois by ip address, such as samspade.org's "do stuff" tool that will give the registering party of an ip address.
(mods I am not sure if this is appropriate in this context or not, please edit as you see fit)
