today i got an ip "4.13.25.X79" come into my server and i thought how odd it starting with a single dig 4. so i did the normal thing and traced it Thinking it was from some router. It came back as if it was from level3 backbone. Could this be a proxie of some sort? normaly when tracing an IP you will get the ISP company name under the Reg but i got nothing. If someone else could check this out and give me some feed back on where i made my mistake, please do. Thanks to everyone in advance.

Thorlord,

You could try a "ping" or a "tracert" (trace route) on that IP, and see if the remote hostname resolves. ARIN shows it as a backbone too, but not the same one you found.

IPs that start with 4 are perfectly valid!

Company called Genuity owns the whole class A block: 4.0.0.0 - 4.255.255.255

Genuity right,

but when i asked him about it he acted like he didnt know what i was talking about. and in 10 hops thats more like a major company/isp or something of the sort not a line for home use. So i was thinking mayeb he was at his office?

Who did you ask? I am sure whomever you asked didn't know what you were talking about. They own ~ 16194277 IPs, and really cannot possibly know what is happening at each one of them.

I had asked the guy with the I.P., It could be some guy at his office but if you look at the I.P. its a short route to a big network, it could maybe be a Hproxie or something, just found it interesting something to learn about.

I have this guy coming onto my server with an AOL I.P. address starting trouble and DOSS the server shut down the server all day long so i have been keeping an eye out and learning new things. We stop they guy that was doing it but when dealing with AOL they make it hard for you to find anything. I know there's away to trace down an AOL ip address to the account other then using a court order, at least down to the city. as the I.P. addressing rotates it still has a local server to dial into and that has a prefix and area code addressing for the I.P. assignment. As you would guess AOL keeps a tight grip on such matters. Any input about AOL a to learn more about it?
