Tracking download amounts

how does one do this?

If I wanted to allow my members to download content, but to have a bandwith limit of 500mb each, how would I go about doing this?

depends on the type of content, but I'd store the info into a database. You could organize it like a bank account and every time a users requests a file you could deduct a certain amount from his account.

There are massive amounts of 'download' sites out there - I am curious as to what tracking methods are used as well for downloads and shareware...
