Since I was not prepared for this one, it snuck in, so I've got no entry for it in robots.txt.

Which do you think would be better? Deny from as I have it now, or by UA for that more permanent solution?

This Pita [google.com] bot is a toughie. (Don't get too caught up in some of those threads because in them the acronym PITA means pain in the _ss...for those who might not know.)

131.179.64.*** - - [03/Jan/2004:20:01:50 -0800] "GET /robots.txt HTTP/1.0" 200 1524 "-" "Pita"
131.179.64.*** - - [03/Jan/2004:20:01:52 -0800] "GET / HTTP/1.0" 200 20402 "-" "Pita"

I see no mention of Stanford's project and it sure ain't the WebVac as one of those threads indicates it's name was changed to. NOT!

Oh, very methodically took one file every two seconds.

From what I gather from the other Pita [google.ch]-posts the "old" Pita and WebVac are the same (see more... [webmasterworld.com]).

And if I understand you (and for all others that don't know too much about American Universities): It is possible that the University of California, Los Angeles took over the Pita project from the also california-based Stanford University?

I tend to favor (public) educational institutions, but since more and more of them begin to get money for so called research project from private and profit oriented organizations one begins to doubt the intention...I fear we'll never know for sure
