I always figured it was the agent id in the ISP's software, possibly a branded browser skin. Example:

(compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; CDsource=v2.15e.02; MSN 6.1; MSNbMSFT; MSNmen-gb; MSNc00; v5m)
