There are no missing files on the page that would generate the 404. It seems to be more related to the weird call to the domain "GET / ~/". The requests are from completely different IP addresses - hardly any two alike - mostly North America.
Anyone who can help shed light - we very much appreciate.
The first line you mention I haven't seen, but the Mozilla/4.0+(compatible;+MSIE+5.5;+Windows+98) lines are all too familiar...
