Surfstats x Analog

It's a huge difference!

Hello again.

I use Analog for my log analysis. I'm quite happy, and had been using it since day 1.

I've decided to run Sufstats. Now comes the problem.

Analog reports a total of 697,000 page views in six months. SurfStats says 1,022,000. This is a BIG difference.

Which one to trust? Or do I have to get a third one and run my logs through it too?

Thanks!

Hi Freitasm,

In analog have you set pageinclude for non-html? or 304issuccess off?

What about running a day/hours worth, then you could check the logs manually.

Marc.

Yes, pageinclude lists .asp as well.

I'll add 304issuccess off and rerun.

Thanks!

Sorry i didn't mean set issuccess to off, just wondering if you had as that could of been a reason.

Yep, figured out that if this is on it would exclude some line (300,000?)... Anyway the switch is nowhere in the .cfg file, and it's on by default.

I did run SurfStats on logs from other three servers I have. One of then had 16,000 pages served according to Analog, and 20,000 according to SurfStats. This over a period of three months (yes very low traffic site this one).

I just wonder if this difference gets bigger on big sites, like my million pages one.

For selling space for ad purporses SurfStats is better for me - the traffic is much bigger :)

Ok, found some stuff, and will need some help.

Analog did not report but when I saw the spike on a certain date using surfStats I've decided to have a look in the log files.

SurfStat report 130,000 page views on a single day - mind you the average on my site is 9,000 a day!

Looking at the logs I've seen two days with requestes from an Asian IP address, two per seconde. The thing was hammering my server - glad the server and database survived for two days.

Anyway the requests are HEAD instead of GET or POST. Any ideas of what is a HEAD request?

Thanks

Head means only header info was requested, not the full page.
