Mozilla/5.0 useragent

which browser is it?

WebTrends Live is reporting Mozilla/5.0 as Netscape 5, but Netscape 5 was never released (went straight from v.4 to v.6). I'd like to know what browser visitors were using with this useragent. Does anyone know what browser Mozilla/5.0 represents and/or can you point me to any resources for lists of useragents? I've been searching but haven't found any good sources of info.

I don't know about "released" - but you could download Mozilla 5.0 for Linux, I don't know about any other OS...

If you take a look at your raw log, the whole string you will see for the user agent (browser) is probably something like this:

"Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows 98)"

This indicates a Internet Explorer 5.0 browser. The reason the string commences with Mozilla/5.0 is to ensure that web sites believe the browser is compliant and can display their content. This is a hangover from the days in which web sites often would only display their content to Netscape browsers (which identified themselves with the string 'Mozilla').

Unfortunately, I don't have access to the raw log files so I can't see the full string. Is MSIE 5 the only browser with a lead in of Mozilla/5.0? Apparently there's a Linux v.5 as well.

Mozilla/5.0 generally indicates a Gecko-based browser, including Mozilla itself, but probably more commonly one of the recent Netscape releases. Netscape 6+ user agent strings can be found at (http://devedge.netscape.com/viewsource/2002/gecko-useragent-strings/ ). Netscape recommends looking for "Gecko" in the string.

MSIE 5 will not report as Mozilla 5; all Windows MSIE releases to date, including AOL, will report as Mozilla/4.0 (compatible); Compuserve 7 and AOL 5+ (MacOSX) clients are Gecko browsers and will report as Mozilla/5.0 (compatible).

This is very helpful information. Thanks very much. For design purposes I was trying to determine if these were Netscape 4 or 6 users, but now it appears they are probably neither, and I'm glad.

Netscape 6.x will also give you Mozilla/5.0 , but I consider Netscape 6 to be dead and belly-up.

Generally :
1) *all* browsers that have come out of the Mozilla project are referring to themselves as Mozilla/5.0 - regardless of OS, CPU etc.
2) each and every present version of IE will identify itself as Mozilla/4.0
3) Safari for Mac and Konqueror for Linux gives Mozilla/5.0

Netscape 5 was as far as I know never released - they went from 4.x to 6.x skipping the 5.0 version when the Mozilla OSS was created - this to keep the numbering on par featurewise with IE.

jm_uk is simply wrong. IE has never used the Mozilla/5.0 identifier
