Is it a dream?

The people I work for would like me to find a way to determine what organizations our site visitors are coming from.

I can do this manually, but it's a giant PITA as we get 23,000 visitors a month. Actually, it's more like impossible.

As far as I can tell, no software exists that does this work. Well, WebTrends claims to, but if there's no reverse lookup for the IP, you have to go to ARIN whois to find out who owns it (that's the manual part).

Any suggestions on how I can tell these folks I work with that it's an impossible dream and that our time and effort and money are better spent shoring up the value proposition of our site so that prospects readily identify themselves (ie. by registering or contacting us?).

There are definitely reporting tools that resolve IP addresses to their host names. We have this as part of our Accrue system, and I have seen it on others. You might just be looking in the wrong place on webtrends. Try looking for a host names report or checking for something that resolves host names.
