How do the search engines get the information?

I'm new here. I was just wondering how the search engines get information about Click Through Popularity.

If I wanted to find good sites for link exchange, is it possible to find out about the Click Through Popularity for links on those sites? Also, are there ways to find out how much traffic other sites are getting?

Hi tibscl, welcome to webmasterworld :)

>>how the search engines get information about Click Through Popularity.

Usually this is achieved by passing outbound links through a redirect script rather than linking directly. For example, mouseover this link and have a look at the status bar at the bottom of your browser: [webmasterworld.com...]

It's actually pointing at a file called redir.cgi with some variables added that do things like count the number of clicks, or track the referring page.

Not unless they publish this information on the web. There are some companies out there who pay ISPs for information on sites people visit which could give you an idea, but these services are very expensive.

I'm still confused. If I put a simple html Web page together with no script, how are outbound links passed through a redirect script? Do the search engines modify the page?

They're not. I'm afraid i'm not quite sure what you mean. I'll try and explain the process.

When you click on a link to a result in some search engines (e.g. Alltheweb but not Google), you are not actually going directly to the site in question. Instead, you are taken to a script that counts the click and then redirects you to the other site. They add up all the clicks for a particular site and that tells them how popular the site is.
