I'm in the process of developing a new site, and checked the stats to see if any spiders had been through it yet. Only googlebot and alltheweb had begun to spider it, there have been 4 total visitors, however it's been bookmarked 14 times.

Obviousally, this is not possible, but makes me wonder about my other sites bookmarked stats.

Modlogan and webalizer (both free site trackers that come with site hosting) are all I've used so far, and they have the exact same statistics.

Any idea on how these or other trackers calculate bookmarks?

Thanks.

Up until recently, you could calculate bookmarks by counting the number of calls for favicon.ico. However, newer browsers are calling for the favicon for other purposes than bookmarking - for instance for display in the address bar or in the tab of a tabbed browser.

So favicon.ico gets called on every page view in newer browsers. There is no longer any way to calculate bookmarks.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'd completely forgotten about that, as my browser does it as well, guess that's what you get for delving into the details and forgetting the simple facts.
