404 error pages

where are they coming from?

My website is set up with FrontPage and I use live stats for tracking purposes. Every week I check entry pages and the 404 page is in the top 5. This week, with 4 days logged, I have 192 hits which seems excessive. My strongest entry page only has 268 hits. After I check this, I go the check the error pages and nothing comes up except this file. /cgi-bin/formmail.cgi

Next I check download errors, nothing comes up.

So I did a search for (/cgi-bin/formmail.cgi) on my site. But there are no occurences. So my question is, what's causing all the error pages. Is this an excessive number or normal. Is there anyway I can reduce my error pages.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That looks like a hacker attempting to exploit a weakness in Matt's Formmail script. It is very common to get requests for that file.

I think you can block or redirect the requests using Apache [httpd.apache.org] mod_rewrite [httpd.apache.org] or similar.

Yep, Birdman's got it. They look for formail in all the usual places, without concern to the platform involved which may not even use formail in the first place.
