Redirecting www.domain.com

to domain.com

What might be the disadvantages and advantages of redirecting www.domain.com to domain.com at .htaccess level?

I do it largely because I hate the www., it's ugly and pointless. And in the beginning got in the habit of writing url address without it without thinking about it so too late to change.

I'm asking now because Googlebot is having a very hard time understanding it, page after page and just 301s so am concerned it is actually going to harm the site in serps terms.

Fast also has problems with it on occasion although not recently, Slurp and Wisenut and Zyborg no problem at all.
